Amidst the difference of opinions, we have come to an agreement that even though our music syllabuses
are aligned with the currents of trend of music education per se, it is very academic (vis-a-vis "applied learning") and does not relate/address the multitude of music experiences of our children outside school. A critical issue is the capacity/readiness of the music teachers to realise the intention of the syllabus and whether, the music teachers (who are taught in the "academic" fashion) are the best person to teach music(?!) as compared to the practitioners who are out there constantly breaking new grounds.

With regards to the issue of "innovation" in music, we talked about how the current framing of our music learning outcomes (viz. performing-creating-listening-understanding) may be stifling the musical growth of our children, as these outcomes are NOT necessarily compartmentalised into parts of a framework. Rather, we should be looking at how these various direct music activities interact to form meaningful musical experiences for the children. We alluded to the example of how when children are enjoying themselves through jamming/making music together as a group - they do not see themselves as realising "listening", "performing" or "creating" per se. We also talked about how the teaching of the 3 Cs (Curiosity, Cooperation, Confidence) are embedded in our syllabuses (<33%) but our teachers are not ready/competent enough to foreground it in the music lessons.
